While the company itself has roots dating back to the late 1960's Macanudo cigars weren't sold in the United States until the early 70's. In 1971, the General Cigar Company purchased the rights to the Macanudo name from the Cuban brand, Punch. At the time, Macanudo cigars were produced in Jamaica, However, in 2000, General Cigar moved production of the cigars to the Dominican Republic. That facility is located in Santiago, in the north-central part of the country.

Generally considered a mild cigar flavor, Macanudo cigars come in both a light shade Connecticut wrapper as well as a darker-colored Maduro wrapper. All Macanudos are produced by the popular General Cigar Company.
