The Foundation story is, at its heart, the story of company founder Nick Melillo. Born and raised in Connecticut, Melillo was immersed in the stories and traditions of the storied Connecticut leaf. Over the years, he traveled extensively, studying the finer nuances of tobacco cultivation and blending, all the while dreaming of restoring Connecticut-grown tobacco to its place atop the World’s best. Melillo travels brought him under the spell of the tobaccos of Nicaragua, where he would eventually land as resident tobacco guru for Drew Estate Cigars. Melillo finally struck out on his own to launch the Foundation Cigar Company. His first release, El Gueguense “The Wiseman,” was an instant hit, laying the groundwork for a parade of overwhelming successes, each sharing a Nicaraguan spirit, all the while being deeply rooted in Melillo’s beloved home, Connecticut.
